10:08 Seomoz.Org How to Get Started Building Links for SEO

Posted by KameronJenkins Search for information about SEO, and you’ll quickly discover three big themes: content, user experience, and links. If you’re just getting started with SEO, that last theme will likely seem a lot more confusing and challenging than the others. That’s because, while content and user experience are under the realm of our control, links aren’t… at least not completely. Think of this post as a quick-and-dirty version of The Beginner’s Guide to SEO’s chapter on link building. We definitely recommend you read through that as well, but if you’re short on time, this condensed version gives you a quick overview of the basics as well as actionable tips that can help you get started. Let’s get to it! What does “building links” mean? Link building is a term used in SEO to describe the process of increasing the quantity of good links from other websites to your own. Why are links so important? They’re one of the main (although not the only!) criteria

10:23 Seomoz.Org How to Get a Customer to Edit Their Negative Review

Posted by MiriamEllis “When you forgive, you in no way change the pas — but you sure do change the future.” — Bernard Meltzer Your brand inhabits a challenging world in which its consumers’ words make up the bulk of your reputation. Negative reviews can feel like the ultimate revenge, punishing dissatisfactory experiences with public shaming, eroded local rankings, and attendant revenue loss. Some business owners become so worried about negative reviews, they head to fora asking if there is any way to opt-out and even querying whether they should simply remove their business listings altogether rather than face the discordant music. But hang in there. Local business customers may be more forgiving than you think. In fact, your customers may think differently than you might think.  I’ve just completed a

Posted by KristinTynski In 2019, high-authority links remain highly correlated with rankings. However, acquiring great links is becoming increasingly difficult. Those of you who operate publications of any variety, especially those who enjoy high domain authority, have likely received several link building requests or offers like this each day: “Please link to my suspect site that provides little or no value.” “Please engage in my shady link exchange.” “I can acquire 5 links of DA 50+ for $250 each.” Or maybe slightly more effectively: “This link is broken, perhaps you would like to link here instead.” “You link to X resource, but my Y resource is actually better.” This glut of SEOs who build links through these techniques above have been consistently eroding the efficacy of this style of

10:30 Seomoz.Org How to Boost Content Linkability Without Wasting Your Marketing Budget

Posted by Alex-T I’m always fascinated with the marketing budgets of enterprise-level companies that are ready to pay astronomical sums to contractors. A recent shmooze in the community was thanks to Hertz that paid 32M to Accentura agency, which (so far) hasn't resulted in any substantial changes to their site. Though I personally don't work with client’s who throw around millions of dollars, that doesn’t affect the quality of services that I provide. My average client wants to get the maximum by spending as little as possible. It might sound like a tough job for me and indeed it is, but I love the challenges that a small budget brings, as it helps me stay creative and reach new professional heights. So while the budget isn't a challenge, changing my client's mindset is, and that's because all of my

10:30 Seomoz.Org The Ultimate Guide to SEO Meta Tags

Posted by katemorris Editor's note: This post first appeared in April of 2017, but because SEO (and Google) changes so quickly, we figured it was time for a refresh! Meta tags represent the beginning of most SEO training, for better or for worse. I contemplated exactly how to introduce this topic because we always hear about the bad side of meta tags — namely, the keywords meta tag. One of the first things dissected in any site review is the misuse of meta tags, mainly because they're at the top of every page in the header and are therefore the first thing seen. But we don't want to get too negative; meta tags are some of the best tools in a search marketer's repertoire. There are meta tags beyond just description and keywords, though those two are picked on the most. I've broken down the most-used (in my experience) by the good, the bad, and the indifferent. You'll notice that the list gets longer as we get to the bad ones. I didn't get to cover all of the meta tags

10:30 Seomoz.Org The ABCs of Video Content: How to Build a Video Marketing Strategy

Posted by getsprunk Take a moment to think about how you’ve used the internet today. Which posts made you stop scrolling through your Instagram feed? What webpages did you spend the most time on? What content did you enjoy? If you’re like most of us, there’s a good chance that videos played a factor in your answers to all three of those questions. So it’s no surprise that marketing experts have been encouraging brands to use more video for years now. Despite all this hype, many small to medium brands still use very few videos in their marketing, if they use any at all. In our experiences with clients, we’ve seen companies struggle in four major areas: Budget. Some companies don’t believe that video marketing can generate real results, but many simply assume they can’t afford it. Talent. Most small marketing teams don’t have people experienced with creating or starring in videos. Buy-in. Companies that use video well have many people across the

Consulting with other teams always entails organizational and emotional nuance that you may not be privy to. Every interpersonal relationship is unique, and hopefully the circumstances I’m discussing won’t apply to many engagements or projects you take part in. However, when you do end up in a difficult consulting situation, it’s helpful to have a bit of empathy for those you’re working with. But here’s the challenge: Companies are struggling to get traction because competition has reached an all-time high. Keyword difficulty (and CPC) has skyrocketed in most verticals. In my current space, Unified Communication as a Service (UCaaS), some of the CPCs have nearly doubled since 2017, with many keywords hovering close to $300 per click. Not to mention, organic CTRs are declining, and zero-click queries are rising.

The energy in the room is contagious and everyone leaves the conference with the promise of new strategies, connections, and ideas that have the possibility to transform the way you think about business. 10:10 Seomoz.Org New Things I’ve Learned About Google Review Likes

Posted by MiriamEllis Last time I counted, there were upwards of 35 components to a single Google Business Profile (GBP). Hotel panels, in and of themselves, are enough to make one squeal, but even on a more “typical” GPB, it’s easy to overlook some low-lying features. Often, you may simply ignore them until life makes you engage. A few weeks ago, a local SEO came to me with a curious real-life anecdote, in which a client was pressuring the agency to have all their staff hit the “like” button on all of the brand’s positive Google reviews. Presumably, the client felt this would help their business in some manner. More on the nitty-gritty of this scenario later, but at first, it made me face that I’d set this whole GBP feature to one side of my brain as not terribly important. Fast forward a bit, and I’ve now spent a couple of

Posted by Lindsay_Halsey A few years ago, while enjoying a day of skiing at Aspen Highlands with a group of girlfriends, a skier crashed into me from above, out of nowhere. He was a professional skier traveling at an exceptionally fast speed, and I felt lucky to get away with a mere leg injury. I couldn’t put weight on my leg, though, so I went to the local emergency room. After a few hours of various doctors and nurses running scans to diagnose the issue, a new doctor whom I’d never met walked in the room. The first words out of his mouth were, “You have a radial tear in your medial meniscus”. I had no idea what he was talking about. He continued speaking in words better suited for a medical peer than a patient. I wasn’t at all interested in medical-speak. I was a new mom, anxious to return to my

Posted by Dr-Pete On June 6th, on the heels of a core update, Google announced that a site diversity update was also rolling out. This update offered a unique opportunity, because site diversity is something we can directly measure. Did Google deliver on their promise, or was this announcement mostly a PR play? There are a lot of ways to measure site diversity, and we're going to dive pretty deep into the data. If you can't wait, here's the short answer — while Google technically improved site diversity, the update was narrowly targeted and we had to dig to find evidence of improvement. How did average diversity improve? Using the 10,000-keyword MozCast set, we looked at the average diversity across page-one SERPs. Put simply, we measured how many unique sub-domains were represented within each results page. Since page one of Google can have less than ten organic results, this was expressed as a percentage — specifically, the ratio of

10:19 Seomoz.Org SEO Whitepaper: How Distance and Intent Shape a Local Pack

Posted by TheMozTeam In August 2017, a Think With Google piece stated that local searches without “near me” had grown by 150 percent and that searchers were beginning to drop other geo-modifiers — like zip codes and neighborhoods — from their local queries as well. Since we can’t always rely on searchers to state when their intent is local, we should be looking at keywords where that intent is implied. But, before we start optimizing, we need to know whether Google is any good at interpreting implicit local intent and if it’s treated the same as explicit intent. Consider these queries: [sushi near me] would indicate that close proximity is essential; [sushi in Vancouver] seems to cast a city-wide net; while [sushi] is largely ambiguous — are they hungry for general info or actual sushi? And what happens with [best sushi], where quality could take priority over proximity? Google decides what these queries mean, so it’s important for us to understand those decisions. In

The “People also search for” result isn’t new to desktop SERPs, but the rejigging it received in February last year turned it into an entirely different box worth investigating. And since we know you’re wondering what’s inside, we played the Somerset to your Mills and took a look for you. What we found was an amped up, URL-centric version of the original PASF box, the “People also ask” box, and the “Searches related to” you see at the bottom of the SERP — it’s a keyword goldmine and chock-full of content ideas, straight from the horse’s mouth (Google). We’ll take you through how the PASF has changed over the years and how you can take advantage of everything it has to offer — even the odd things. A brief history and the many faces of "People also search for"  We first saw the words “People also search for” in 2012 with the introduction of knowledge graphs. Bringing up the

19:16 Seomoz.Org Uncover How You Stack Up in the Local Search Landscape

Posted by TheMozTeam This blog post was originally published on the STAT blog. With local search as competitive as it is, it’s no longer a question of whether or not you should optimize for local — it’s how soon. And when your goal is to get your online customers to visit your location IRL, your strategy needs to be the real deal. That’s exactly why we asked Christina Miazgowicz, the Senior SEO Account Manager at Seer Interactive, to give us her tried and true guide to local optimization. Christina is a local search wizard who spoke at City Crawl Austin and blew us all away with her insight. Get the competitive edge with a local strategy  It goes without saying (but we’re saying it anyway) that search engines deliver relevant, location-based results for a business’ products or services. It’s how the searcher finds results that are, well, local. We already know that Google leverages factors such as name, address, and phone number to surface local businesses. But

19:16 Seomoz.Org The Case for Pinpoint Local Tracking

Posted by TheMozTeam Not so long ago, tracking a “United States” SERP could give you an accurate depiction of what a searcher would see, regardless of where in the country they were. Now, unless a searcher is actively hiding their whereabouts, Google always knows where they are and serves results that are heavily influenced by their precise surroundings. In other words, the “national” or “market” level SERP is dead. Long live the “precise location” SERP. Of course, even though we know this to be true, we wouldn’t be us if we didn’t validate with a little (a lot of) data — when it comes time to set up your keyword tracking strategy, we want you to care as much about location as Google does. Setting up the SERP comparisons Since proper keyword segmentation is essential to making sense of your SERP data (and more than one data point is always preferable when proving points), we divvied up our queries into two different categories: General intent keywords. 19:16 Seomoz.Org Is Google's Redesign Good for Ads or Brands?

Posted by Dr-Pete At the end of last week, Google announced a major design change for mobile search results. Minor design tests and changes happen frequently, but this roll-out included two major changes. First, the green [Ads] indicator was replaced with black, bolded text ... Below is the new ad format in a local pack result. Note that I've removed the surrounding design elements (including rounded boxes) to focus on the elements that have changed ... Reactions from the marketing community were swift and often sarcastic, but one reaction clearly missing was surprise. Google has been moving to make ads look more like organic results for years. Has Google finally gone too far? Does this latest change do too much to blend ads and organic results? If we just go back one iteration, it doesn't seem like a huge shift. The most recent version, shown below, also matched the color of the "Ad" marker to the display URL, substituting a thin rounded rectangle for the newer,

19:16 Seomoz.Org How to Crush Your Competitors With TF-IDF

Posted by PJ_Howland This post was originally published on the STAT blog. Even if it’s not making People’s Sexiest Person of the Year, the benefits of TF-IDF for SEO are too unreal not to share. Which is why I'm sharing a breakdown of how to apply this under-used, underappreciated SEO tactic to help you win major traffic. Read on to learn how to leverage TF-IDF and tools like STAT to get insight into what your competitors are up to and what high-quality, relevant content you need to create for searchers. But first... TF-ID-What? TF-IDF stands for term frequency-inverse document frequency. It’s a text analysis technique that Google uses as a ranking factor — it signifies how important a word or phrase is to a document in a corpus (i.e. a blog on the internet). When used for SEO-purposes, it helps you look beyond keywords and into relevant content that can reach your audience. It does this by doing two different things very well. First, it tells you how

19:16 Seomoz.Org E-A-T and SEO: How to Create Content That Google Wants

Posted by Ian-Booth Over the past few months, you’ve probably seen the buzzword (or acronym, rather) “E-A-T” floating around. While this term has been in the lexicon of many SEO’s for quite a while now, since the major Google algorithm update in August 2018 (AKA “the medic update”), a big bright spotlight has been shone on Google’s “E-A-T” — and it’s been frequently on the lips and fingertips of most SEO’s ever since. So why am I talking about it now? Because the days are long gone when you could pop up on Google overnight. To rank well on Google, you need to nurture your brand by building its expertise, authority, and trustworthiness — which is exactly what E-A-T stands for!  In this post, I'll cover the three pillars of E-A-T and share tips on how to incorporate each into your content strategy so that you can rank for the best search terms in your industry.  But first... Initially, this “medic” update seemed to have hit loads of websites

19:16 Seomoz.Org How To Guard Your Google Business Profile from Becoming a Running Joke

Posted by MiriamEllis When customers walk into your place of business, phone you, or reach out to you via email or social media with a question that’s clearly a lead, you’d never, ever answer: “Who knows?” But it’s exactly this, and several related scenarios of absurdity, that have resulted from Google positioning itself as the dominant middle man between customers and local brands while failing to adequately communicate or enforce product policies. Examples of Google Business Profiles gone bad are often comical, but it’s no laughing matter for your business to shed revenue for the sake of some jester’s joke. Then, spammers jump into the game, and that’s about as humorous as hitting your funny bone. And, sometimes, it’s even somebody on your own staff or a marketer you’ve hired who goofs. Good local companies
